Criminology is one of the least known careers in our country as the scope for it is also relatively less as compared to other options.
So the question naturally rises, is criminology a good degree or a rewarding career option? The answer for it is – yes, if pursued, it is one of the most exciting careers one can have.
Understanding a crime and the psychology of a criminal; find ways to curb it; breaking and making new laws for the betterment of the society etc., is the main job of a criminologist.
Even as criminology is still developing in India, the existing opportunities include sensitising criminal justice functionaries like police, the judiciary, and investigation agencies, through proper training, courses and seminars.
One can also opt for teaching as career after a course in criminology. Social welfare departments dealing with environmental crimes and human rights issues are the ones who are always in need of criminologists.

Qualification / Eligibility needed for admission to criminology courses
Both undergraduate (BA/BSc) and Post Graduate (MA/MSc) courses in criminology are available in various colleges. For a undergraduate course, basic requirement is class XII in either Arts or Science.
While to pursue a Post Graduation course, one has to be a graduate from either Science or Arts stream. Some colleges offer Diploma in Criminology and the qualification for that as well is graduation in either Arts or Science.
